How to sign a Word document online (the reliable way)

Sign a Word document in three steps

   Export the .docx to PDF

   In Word: File → Save As → PDF. In Google Docs: File → Download → PDF. This locks the layout, what you sign is exactly what the other party opens.

   Open the PDF in the free signer

   It loads in your browser without being uploaded. Place your drawn, typed, or photographed signature on the signature line.

   Download the signed, flattened PDF

   Send that back. The signature is part of the page and can't shift, unlike anything living inside an editable .docx.

Why not sign the .docx directly?

A Word file is a living layout: fonts substitute, line breaks reflow, and a signature image anchored to a paragraph can land somewhere else on another machine, or be deleted with one keystroke, since the whole file stays editable after 'signing'. Tools that accept .docx directly (including our own best-effort preview) are working against that nature; the banner they show, formatting may vary, is the honest summary.

Exporting to PDF costs one click, is built into Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice, and removes the entire problem class: fixed layout, flattened signature, and a file the recipient can't silently edit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sign a .docx without converting it?

Some tools attempt it (ours has a best-effort preview), but the result is inherently fragile: .docx reflows between machines and stays editable after signing. Converting to PDF first, one click in Word, is what makes the signature trustworthy, so it's the workflow we recommend.

Doesn't Word have its own signature feature?

Word supports certificate-based signature lines, which is a different thing: it needs a digital certificate and an unmodified file to stay valid. For the everyday 'sign this and send it back', exporting to PDF and placing a simple signature is faster and universally readable.

Is my document uploaded during any of this?

No. The PDF export happens in your own Word or Docs; the signing happens in your browser with no upload, verifiable by signing offline. At no point does the document touch a third-party server.
